ZoomiLife reports that Mazda—officially—will not be developing hybrid or electric cars. In a press release, the automaker expressed its intention to develop more efficient vehicles using conventional technology. Will this spell trouble for Mazda, or might this be feasible strategy?

This is strange since Mazda has access to Ford hybrid technology (partial Ford ownership). I fear that Subaru is following the same path to loss of market share.

There appears to be an attitude that if you can get the highway MPG high enough, it makes the vehicle competitive with a hybrid. The European diesel advocates seem to be following this approach. Personally, I don't care because the standard mileage tests, especially the city MPG will be enough to put their vehicles near the bottom of the list. When the cost of gasoline again reaches $3-4/gal., they will have a sales problem.
