Notes: It's time to start recording tanks again after a "short" hiatus.
February 26, 2006 201 6.3 32.1
Notes: Okay, I admit. I forgot to input a tank or two! :( Mileage is terrible, too. Short rides just kill it here at school.
November 9, 2005 288 8.3 34.7
  Strategy: Strategy? Ha!
Notes: I love Rice.
September 21, 2005 225 6.9 32.7
Strategy: Nothing, anymore. Tons of AC and the hecktic college atmosphere don’t allow it.
Notes: Welp, this is Houston. 100 degree Houston. My schedule is crazy and fuel economy has tanked. On the upside, I spoke with the Chief of Police for the Rice University Police Department about purchasing a hybrid (perhaps a Prius) for their fleet.

  August 23, 2005 390 8.7 45.0
August 23, 2005 390 8.7 45.0
Notes: Okay, I’m gonna be honest. I lost the mileage records for the 3 tanks it took to drive from Orlando to Houston. I’d say we averaged around 45. Sorry sorry sorry!
August 11, 2005 64 1.5 41.6
Notes: Okay, so this isn’t a real tank. This is called "packing up the car to leave for college and filling up right before the trip." Off we go!
August 9, 2005 391 8.3 47.1
Notes: Last tank of the summer. Included a couple trips to the dealer. Updated GPS DVD to 4.2
  July 20, 2005 445 9 49.5
  July 6, 2005 382 8 47.8
May 28, 2005 395 8.6 46.1
Notes: Guess I better get that gas gauge checked again. It’s acting up even AFTER the "fix."
  May 11, 2005 285 6.1 46.8
April 25, 2005 257 5.7 45.1
Notes: I think my 6 gallon fillups are due to a bad station near me. I try to avoid going there, but it’s the closest around!
  April 11, 2005 274 5.9 46.5
April 2, 2005 382 7.8 48.8
  Strategy: See? Tire inflation helps.
Notes: Something’s odd. My gauge is continually saying "empty" after 8 gallons are consumed. Either the gauge is still rediculously cautious or the pumps aren’t completely filling the tank.
March 21, 2005 319 7.7 41.3
Notes: Inflate your tires, people! At 125 miles I pumped them up from 30 to 41/39 PSI. Mileage shot up from 37.7 MPG. Don’t let them drop that low! Got 70.5 back from the gas station, though ;)
March 4, 2005 331 7.9 41.7
Notes: Low mileage is probably due to the fact that I usually have my XM Radio display on instead of the Energy display. I should check my tire pressure, though.
February 12, 2005 327 7.3 45.1
Notes: Hmm... no increase in tank capacity since that gas gauge/tank fix at the dealership. I was told to fill up shortly after - yes - 300 miles! What in the world? It only filled up with 7.5, too...
February 1, 2005 112 2.5 45.1
Notes: Just got the car back from the dealership. The gas gauge does seem to be much more accurate, although when I filled up with 1 bar remaining, I still only got 6.6 gallons in. I also need to disable the seatbelt and reverse beepers once again, after the service.
January 14, 2005 197 4.3 45.7
Notes: Just dropped off the car for the brake light recall and gas gauge fix.
January 5, 2005 340 7.7 44.2
  Strategy: Huh? Strategy??
Notes: Notes to self: Fill tires. Get brake recall service. Get free NAV DVD. Get gas gauge fix.
December 15, 2004 431 8.8 48.9
Strategy: Not much strategy anymore. Sometimes I deadband cruise and I usually don’t crazy-speed, but I’m not overly concerned with strategy anymore.
Notes: Gosh darn! I need to fill those tires! I’m waiting for the 10k service to do the gas gauge fix...
November 24, 2004 412 8.8 46.6
Notes: Still haven’t increased that tire pressure, yet... or gotten the gas gauge fix. I think I ought to!
November 8, 2004 400 8.7 46.1
Notes: School traffic, lower tire pressure, general apathy... what do they all have in common? They contribute to my lower mileage! Yes, I still love the car, but I’m much too busy to strive for that extra 4MPG. My sincere apologies.
October 20, 2004 429 9.5 45.2
  Notes: *yawn*
September 24, 2004 358 8.6 41.6
Notes: With almost all of my driving being in school traffic, my mileage plummited. Depressing, eh?
August 30, 2004 414 8.8 47.0
Notes: Oh, it’s officially school time. Bye, bye, fuel.
August 12, 2004 155 3.9 39.9
Notes: Wow. This is what traffic does to a vehicle, ladies and gentlemen. Sitting in parking lot jams up to 3 times a day now that school is back in session means only one thing: wasted gas. Two hurricanes are headed our way so I had to fill up early. Better luck next time!
August 3, 2004 417 8.8 47.4
Strategy: Paying less attention to economy strategy... driving a bit more like a normal person!
July 8, 2004 367 7.6 48.2
Strategy: Take it easy. Anticipate. Deadband cruise. I’ve been watching the Consumption screen instead of the Energy screen lately.
Notes: I was over 53 MPG before I brought the car in for its first service. 5000 mile oil change, an alignment (already!), SSD-40D ECU update, and loose screw tightening. During this service my economy figured dropped by 6.5 MPG. I reset, only to find that they deflated my tires to 30 PSI! Raised them to 41/39 but wasn’t able to recover the damage. Aggregate data is as reported.
June 20, 2004 221 4.2 52.3
Strategy: Slow acceleration. Deadband cruise. Relax.
Notes: Best mileage yet, but as this was only a half-tank I can’t celebrate too much.
June 14, 2004 399 7.9 50.5
Strategy: I’m not in a rush, so I don’t drive like it.
Notes: Woohoo. My best yet. Stick the pump in, press. Wait a minute, it popped back up. Pressed. Popped back up. It’s like topping off from the very beginning! Gave my hand a nice workout for about 2 gallons. Pressed the "help" button and the guy comes out. Tests it himself, and confirms that my tank and the pump don’t go like peas and carrots. Fine, fine. I continue my workout and get to about 6.5 gallons. I hear a gurgle. Gurgle isn’t good. Nope. Pulled out the pump. Okay, I pulled out half the tank of gas, too. At least a cup, likely more, gets burped up. Spills down the side of my car and onto the ground. Brilliant. Just brilliant.
May 26, 2004 500 10 50.2
Strategy: Deadband gliding. Anticipate. Don’t speed too much.
Notes: Killed two birds with once stone. My first 500 mile tank and first over 50 MPG. Yahoo! I wasn’t even going crazy trying to maximize mileage.
May 9, 2004 412 8.4 48.9
Strategy: Driving it a bit more naturally. I think the economy bug finally found another host. I still use technique, but don’t care quite as much.
April 17, 2004 412 8.4 49.1
Strategy: Cancel energy flow. During cruise, never charge the battery.
March 30, 2004 368 7.4 49.6
Strategy: Prius glide technique: limit energy transfer.
Notes: I thought for sure I’d break 50 mpg this time. It was the last trip that dropped it below the threshold. In fact, I ended up on the wrong side of the pump (oops!) and went down .1 mpg navigating to the other side :)
March 10, 2004 445 9.4 47.3
Strategy: First half: Use cruise control as often as possible. Second half: Disengage energy flow and glide. Cruise control on the highway at speed limit.
March 10, 2004 345 7.8 44.5
Notes: Approximated tank #5. I did not record data for the first 5 tanks.
March 10, 2004 345 7.8 44.5
Notes: Approximated tank #4. I did not record data for the first 5 tanks.
March 10, 2004 344 7.7 44.5
Notes: Approximated tank #3. I did not record data for the first 5 tanks.
March 10, 2004 344 7.7 44.5
Notes: Approximated tank #2. I did not record data for the first 5 tanks.
March 10, 2004 344 7.7 44.5
Notes: Approximated tank #1. I did not record data for the first 5 tanks.
February 28, 2004 361 8 45.0
Strategy: Brisk acceleration and then cruise control to maintain speed. Anticipate slowdowns and glide to a stop.
