December 18, 2009 255 6.7 38.3
Strategy: Cold winter blast with lots of snow. My timer is broken for my engine block heater... Looking back at last year it looks like the heater really helped MPG
Notes: Temp near zero.
November 29, 2009 320 6.4 50.1
Strategy: Trying to limit use of heater.
Notes: Temp in the 40's.
November 11, 2009 360 6.6 54.9

October 4, 2009 401 7.3 55.1
Strategy: Nothing special. I was at 58 MPG but then we got a cold spell.
Notes: Temp in the 60's. Things are cooling off! Summer is over :(
September 13, 2009 388 7 55.7
Strategy: No AC. Pulse and Hyperglide on longer highway trips. It's cooler in the mornings now.
Notes: Temp in the 80's
August 22, 2009 369 6.3 58.3
Strategy: Hypergliding on country roads. No rush and no AC!
Notes: Temp in the 70's
August 8, 2009 367 6.3 58.1
Strategy: Almost no AC and really doing pulse and glide on the highway
Notes: Temp in the 80's
July 24, 2009 303 5.6 54.0
Strategy: I did not try as much as I could because we were coming back from Chicago very late!
Notes: Just tried to keep to longer trips and no A/C.Temp in the 80's

  April 1, 2009 304 6 50.6
March 21, 2009 325 7.1 45.5
Strategy: It's warm enough to pulse and glide again! Woohoo!
Notes: Stopped using engine block heater. Also stopped using the engine blocking foam. At times it's above 50 and people say that's when you should remove them. Temp in the 40's
March 10, 2009 308 7.3 42.4
Notes: Starting to warm up! Temp in the 30's
February 25, 2009 300 7.1 42.2
Notes: Not much to talk about. Just hoping spring comes soon! Temp was near zero
February 10, 2009 289 7.2 40.1
Notes: Very cold. Used engine block heater whole time. Temp was was near -10
January 30, 2009 285 7.3 39.3
Notes: I think it's warmed up a bit... Temp was near zero
January 15, 2009 209 6.3 33.0
Notes: I expect this to be my worst full tank. It was -50 F with windchill! Yikes! I did have the engine block heater... I must admit that I am not that excited to enter my tanks in... That's why I wait a while, until I have a few... It's just not that fun to get 33 MPG! Temp was in the -20's!
January 8, 2009 302 7.6 39.9
Notes: We were starting to get a winter blast. I did not use the engine block heater. Wanted to see the difference. But then it got too cold to do a direct comparison from the previous tank. Temp was near zero
December 22, 2008 264 5.8 45.4
Notes: Trip to Chicago airport. Temp in the 20's
December 21, 2008 82 2.5 32.3
Notes: Really bad snow storms. Decided to cut my losses. And have a redo, and fill up. So this is a short tank. Temp was almost zero
December 20, 2008 321 7.2 44.5
Strategy: Few highway trips in this. Changed route to have more highway for commute.
Notes: Temp in the 20's
December 15, 2008 325 7.2 45.4
Strategy: First tank with a full engine block heat.
Notes: Temp in the 20's
December 5, 2008 310 7.1 43.8
Strategy: WOW This is horrible. Normal commute... I miss the good old summer weather. This thank was at the end of November.
Notes: At the end of this tank I installed an engine block heater, and blocked the engine grill. I just got a timer half way through my new tank (yet to be listed). So now it will automatically turn on (the heater) three hours before I go to work. Of course my commute home is going to be just as bad. It\'s hard to tell if the engine blocking helped as the temperature keeps falling. After my next tank I think the temperatures will have stabilized and I will be using the EBH full time. I do have my car in a garage that is attached to my house. Although I don\'t do any special heating and what not. Temp in the 20's
November 15, 2008 328 7 46.9
Strategy: My usual work commute. The only difference is it's really cold!!!
Notes: Since I have really bad scores because of cold I am thinking I should install a engine block heater and block the engine grill with pipe insulation. Temp in the 30's
October 25, 2008 388 7.7 50.5
Strategy: My usual. Tried to limit my heater use. I am doing some research on Prius chat about Winter and the Prius. I might do some blocking in the front. We did go to Wisconsin so there is some highway driving at 65 MPH on this tank.
Notes: Temp in the 50's
October 10, 2008 395 7.3 54.2
Strategy: Trying to maximize warm-up time by forcing the battery to charge more, then use that electric at the end... Seems to help a little in this colder weather.
Notes: One highway trip on this tank to my parents... It's hard to say what the average temperature is for me because it's like 30 degrees in the morning and 70 after work... Anyway... It's Fall! I got my car in the spring. So it will be interesting to see what my winter MPG really is! I can already see my average fall a little as it gets colder! Temp in the 60's
September 26, 2008 292 5.3 55.4
Strategy: Just a normal commute. No highway all City.
Notes: I don't know how to say what the temperature is. Because it's like 55F in the morning now, and 80 when I leave work. We also had a colder spell in the 50s! So, I am surprised I did as well as I did. I drove the car for most of the miles. Temp in the 70's
September 8, 2008 391 7.5 52.1
Strategy: Commuting I used all my tricks. But it's starting to get cold, and a long highway trip killed my MPG... I think I am going to try harder on my next high speed (65 MPH trip). I don't think Cruise Control does a very good job.
Notes: This had one long highway trip that knocked my record 57.8 MPG commuting to 52 MPG (65 MPH kills your MPG). Temp in the 70's
August 27, 2008 389 6.8 57.1
Strategy: I was the only one who drove the car! And looky at my score! 57.1 best yet (granted only .1 better than my previous tank record). Things have cooled down here in Iowa so no AC this time around.
Notes: This had a highway trip to my parents... I averaged about 58 MPG all told (140 miles round trip). Also I filled up before I got down to two pips due to the upcoming hurricane Gustav. I just did not want to watch another 30 cent gas jump in one day (remember Katrina). Temp in the 70's
August 11, 2008 379 7.6 49.6
Strategy: This tank was 100% my wife driving her sister back. I know they used the A/C. Her strategy was to just set it and forget it (Cruise Control).
Notes: Temp in the 80's
August 10, 2008 369 6.7 55.1
Strategy: We were driving to Chicago. Getting out of Dubuque, there are alot of hills. So I usually Hyper glide down them to get max speed and then let my speed crash going up them. I think half the trip was at 55 MPH average until we got closer to Chicago. Those highways are 65 MPH but flatter, so I used Cruise Control more.
Notes: We used no A/C the entire way. It was cool enough in the morning. And then we drove back at night (again cooler). Temp in the 70's
August 9, 2008 216 4.1 52.8
Strategy: I did my usual... But I did not really drive the car... I know there was alot of A/C... I am also trying to maximize each cold start mode as best as possible. For example use the battery alot at the last mile of my trip... But on warm-up try and charge it back up (since it will anyway).
Notes: My Wife's sister came to visit and drove the car most of the time. When I did drive I tried my tricks to try and save my average... We filled up early because we were taking a trip to Chicago, and wanted the cheaper Iowa Gas (I pay for it in higher taxes anyway). Temp in the 80's
August 3, 2008 345 6.7 51.8
Strategy: Regular habits in the City. But we ended up needing to use alot of AC
Notes: We were in the 90s this past month. Also my wife drove alot (kills MPG, hehe)... Plus we had to go pick up her sister from Iowa City going 65 MPH in 88 degree+ heat. I was hopping to at least hit 52.. But I fell short. Temp in the 90's
July 25, 2008 405 7.2 56.1
Strategy: The usual P&G... Also realizing the importance of Hyper Glide at highway speeds. Right now I am trying to figure out the best way to accelerate.
Notes: Yeah, it turned out there is some highway on this trip... Had to make a run to the 'rents house this past Sunday. I did use AC... And I think it did not hurt my MPG (kept it at 81 degrees)... I read that the battery, when hot, runs less efficiently... So suffering in the cabin at 90+ degrees makes little sense. Temp in the 80's
July 10, 2008 413 7.6 54.7
Strategy: Alot of 55 MPH country highway again in the hills. Pulse and Glide in towns... Cruise Control as much as possible. But I don't let the Cruise Control climb up the hills (too aggressive). When I go up a hill I let the MPH drop about 10 under, then when I go down I let the car cost / stealth glide down.
Notes: Not as good as last time... I attribute that to more city driving and using the A/C more (it's getting hot out here). This was the 4th of July driving so we were in no rush to get anywhere too fast. I am not sure, but I think the next tank will be mostly City as we don't have any travel plans in the near future. Temp in the 80's
June 30, 2008 394 6.9 57.0
Strategy: This has a good chunk of highway miles for Fathers day. But also the higher temperature is helping as well. After fathers day I was able to keep the car in the 57 MPG range. I think however that I am starting to get into that zone where I may not be able to go any higher with my short commute. We shall see. I am starting to wonder if a Scan Gauge II might help me dial in a little more MPG... I never know exactly how best to accelerate. Brisk, slow... Hmmm
Notes: What a thrill it is to go 394 miles on about $29 in gas! W00T! Temp in the 80's
June 15, 2008 377 7.2 52.1
Strategy: I just set my cruise control and did nothing else. Tried to limit use of AC as much as possible
Notes: This tank was all 65 MPH driving on highways to and from Milwaukee. Temp in the 80's
June 13, 2008 279 5.1 55.2
Strategy: Since this tank had more country highway miles I had to go 55 MPH. There were towns too where I pulsed and glided. I used cruise control as much as possible. But if I went down a hill I would do hyper glide and stop cruise and let my speed crash 5 to 10 MPH when going up a hill. There were a lot of hills.
Notes: Went out to Gays Mills to buy fireworks and got 60 MPG!!! The weather was great but on the way back I had to use AC. Temp in the 70's
June 6, 2008 312 5.9 52.6
Strategy: Working on perfecting my new commute route that seems to give me the best Pulse and Glide in a hilly city that Dubuque, IA is. I am getting expert in using my red light spidey sense!
Notes: Wanted to lock in my MPG score before a highway trip out to my parents. This number is all city driving to work. Temp in the 70's
May 19, 2008 371 7.3 51.0
Strategy: There were alot of hills going out of Dubuque. I would do Hyper Glide (yellow arrows) as much as I could going as much as 15 MPH over... Then when I would go up the hill I would allow my speed to crash 10 MPH below!
Notes: Went to an anime convention in Chicago. The way out I was getting 53 MPG... But on the way back there was a heavy cross wind that killed my MPG... Struggled to get it back up to 51. Temp in the 60's
May 16, 2008 325 6.7 48.7
Strategy: Pulse and glide of course... But we were running late for Mothers Day and had to kick in go really fast over the speed limit (Highway driving for about 80 miles), and there were cross wind gusts of 30 to 40 MPH! That really dogged our MPG... But got back and was able to recover (from 43 to 48 MPG in a few days... not bad)! Filled up earlier than I normally would because we were going to Chicago for ACEN... Iowa gas is always cheaper!
Notes: Temp in the 60's
May 8, 2008 397 8 49.5
Strategy: This was my first tank trying out pulse and glide
Notes: Temp in the 60's
April 24, 2008 384 8.5 45.3
Notes: Just got the car. First fill-up. Temp in the 60's
