| ECO mode and Synthetic oil? New 2010 Prius, really neat car. First 100 mi about 50MPG at 38MPH average, and suspect will improve as engine breaks in. Use ECO mode and think that is best for city driving? Dealer not real clear on oil or changes. Synthetic was mentioned as best so anyone recommend good brand(s) and change frequency? Would like to go 10K mi but suspect 5K is what the dealer wants. Could standard 5 - 20W Penzoil be used without problem if changed at 5K intervals? Guess Toyota concern is heat in engine gumming up standard oil... |

Actually, I would always be in "ECO" mode unless needing extra (or showing off) acceleration.

I have used syn oil since the first 10,000 miles and changed it every 5k for the last 150k miles in my 2004. You will need to stay with 5k intervals to protect your engine warranty for the first 60k miles (or 5 years). After that it will be up to you. I stayed at 5k --- my Prius deserves it.JeffD |

| Thank you jdenburg for info. At 51.3 MPG after 198 mi. Nice break... Will do on oil. Found Mobil 1 0w20 is at local auto store so will DIY after dealers first visit at 5K mi. Found car so quiet critters on road can be in danger, especially if they can't see. 2010 Gen III vanilla package silver |

| The new oil change interval for 2010 Gen III is at 10k, not 5k, using 0w20 syn oil. Last edited by jhinsc; Sat, Dec 11th, 2010 at 08:23 am. |
