Brakes: Hidden savings
Just had my 04 HCH in for oil change and had brakes checked at 95,000 miles.
Still 40%-45% wear left. Had a gas Camry go to 80,000 before needing brakes but the
Civic should hit 120,000 easy. Any other long life brake stories?

How about my 2004 Prius at 150,000 miles. 50% left on rear brakes and 80% left on the front disks. As a high miles/year driver, much of my driving is on highways so YMMV.

Yes, it is amazing. At 70,000 miles on my Honda Civic Hybrid I'm being told that rear brakes have about 90% remaining and front brakes have 50% left. I used to get brakes redone every 30,000 miles.

Also just had 2006 Prius checked at 72,000. About 50% front and rear.
So my family are heavy footed brakers compared to jdenenberg and drquine.

Not "heavy footed", more likely a lower percentage of highway driving.

Driving style does have a lot to do with brake wear. I am not a dedicated hypermiler, but I do drive for FE using a well developed commute profile. With that and some at-the-wheel planning, I typically hit my brakes between 11 and 18 times during a 32 mile commute, and most of those are "one-toe-only" type braking.

My TCH shows almost no appreciable wear at almost 42,000 miles.
