| VIN mapping of hybrid civics? Hi, As part of my analysis of hybrid electric vehicles, has anyone figured out if the VIN numbers of the Honda Civic Hybrid has a code to identify the hybrid versions? We have access to the VIN numbers from the Fatal Accident Reporting System. However, there was not coding for Honda Civic Hybrids in the vehicle manufacture and model field. If we can use the VIN number to identify the hybrids, we can then add them to the pool of Prius hybrids. Ultimately, we may be able to map all hybrids IF there is a VIN field that identifies them as hybrids. By increasing the numbers of known hybrids, we have better metrics for the relative 'hybrid risk.' This helps us deflate the arguments that hybrids are dangerous to pedestrians. Thanks, Bob Wilson |

| I can't help with the new ones, but all pre-2008 model year Civic Hybrid 4-Dr had "FA3" in postitions 4-6. Since all were passenger cars, and all built in Japan, that would start the VIN with "JHMFA3". I also remember seeing somewhere that the production serial numbers all started with 15, but I am not so sure about that one. FYI, the Accord Hybrid was "CN3" in positions 4-6. http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/5599/pictureaq0.jpg RFB |
