Honda Insight performance data
Hi folks,

There was (is) a friendly discussion of the Honda Insight over at PriusChat with IMHO a fairly balanced comments. I'd offered a couple of data gifts to the visitor but realized I'd neglected to share them here.

Edmunds "fuel smack down"

Edmunds recently ran five cars from San Bernadino to Las Vegas over a two-day exercise and this for the three legs, this is what they got:

What I don't understand is why the highway leg from Las Vegas to San Bernadino would show the impact on the Insight.

EPA User Mileage Reports

Looking at the user reports in the EPA site comparing the Insight and 2010 Prius:

We only have three Insight records in our database but they are consistent with the user reports in the EPA data.

I remain curious about the Insight performance on the highway and trying to understand the Edmunds report. It would be very helpful if an Insight owner would run a series of 10 mile, benchmarks at speeds say:
  • 15, 20, 30, 40, 60, 70, 75, 80 - you'll notice 5 mph buckets at the ends and 10-20 mph otherwise
  • warm-up the car with a 20 minute drive before running the tests
  • use cruise control to manage the speed
  • two-runs, 10 miles each, opposite directions and average the results
  • re-run maximum speed runs with and without air conditioner
I suspect the Insight and ZVW30 (2010) Prius have similar mileage with possibly some 'knees' in the curve. This may explain the Edmunds results and surprising Jetta TDI bump at the end.

Thanks,
Bob Wilson
